Andrew and Kristen know to look for the sun after a storm. The high school sweethearts got married young, had four kids in four years, and obtained a heavy load of unanswered questions by the time they were in their late twenties. Now they use those stories of hardship, loss, beauty, and pain to “Howl At The Sun” in hopes of finding their footing again. The song opens with a reflective tone, illustrating moments of nostalgia and the passage of time. The lyrics explore themes of youth, change, and the embrace of warmth and light, as demonstrated in lines such as, “Back door cracked open / Slid in around lunchtime / I know we're not old / But it’s been a long time.”
The chorus emphasizes a transformation, as the artist expresses a newfound freedom: “Now we howl at the sun, like it knows to call back.” This line symbolizes a shift from hesitation to a celebration of life and the beauty of nature, enhancing the song's emotional depth.
Musically, "Howl At The Sun" blends rich harmonies with a light dreamy tempo, creating a beautiful, yet mysterious atmosphere. The vivid imagery includes references to the couple’s roots, Missouri, such as “Making Hickories feel weak at the knees / While the birds sing one tune,” which further underscores the connection between personal experience and their surrounding environment.
“I wanted to capture that feeling of freedom and the joy of being alive,” says Andrew Camp. “It’s about celebrating the moments that make us feel connected to each other and to the world around us.”
“Howl At The Sun” is poised to resonate with listeners through its relatable themes and evocative lyrics. Fans and new listeners alike can anticipate a refreshing sound that invites them to reflect on their own experiences.
