Columbia, MO – 5/6/25 – The January Lanterns, a husband-and-wife indie pop folk duo from Columbia, MO, are set to release their second full-length album, That’s What We’ll Be, on Friday, May 30, 2025. A powerful and heartfelt exploration of personal growth, vulnerability, and the beauty of embracing change, the album marks a transformative moment for the band, both musically and personally.

Formed in 2017, Kristen and Andrew began The January Lanterns as a way to heal and reconnect after their marriage crumbled. What began as a therapeutic practice of songwriting quickly evolved into a creative force of its own, and the couple began to use music as a way to fall back in love, reigniting their passion and building a new future together. After their debut album, For The Kids When They’re Older, this next album, That’s What We’ll Be, reflects the next part of their healing journey of transformation, inviting listeners into a space where uncertainty becomes freedom, and change is embraced as a path toward self-discovery.

The album’s raw lyricism and dynamic soundscapes capture the essence of personal evolution—both for the band and for anyone willing to lean into life’s uncertainties. With a musical style that draws comparisons to the ethereal lyricism of Phoebe Bridgers, the atmospheric textures of Bon Iver, and the harmonious beauty of The Paper Kites, That’s What We’ll Be is a deeply introspective and universally relatable record. Each track tells a story of love, loss, renewal, and the courage to face the unknown. The album, as a whole, captures the vast and endless love felt when you accept and love yourself, as you are, in this specific moment in time. When you can do that for yourself, you can finally give that same gift of love to those around you, like a warm embrace on a cold night.

The January Lanterns were recently recognized as one of the top 12 finalists in the 2024 Telluride Troubadour Songwriting Competition, solidifying their place as emerging voices in the folk and indie scenes. Kristen and Andrew also are active in sync licensing and their songs have been featured in numerous TV shows worldwide.

To celebrate the release of That’s What We’ll Be, The January Lanterns will perform an intimate album release show on Friday, June 13, 2025, at the Compass Inc. Listening Room in Columbia, MO. The show will feature special guest Megan Burtt, a Denver-based artist known for her emotive songwriting and dynamic performances.
